Níjar is a village in the province of Almería, belonging to the Autonomous Region of Andalusia. Níjar is situated in the south side of the Sierra Alhamilla mountains at an altitude of 365 meters, 29 km from the provincial capital Almería, connected by the N-344 road.
The municipality has 30km of coastline bordered by a rocky mountain range whose ravines and dry river-beds create a series of bays and coves with fine sand in some and rounded shingle in others. All these are within the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. Níjar is perfectly situated to reach the different parts of the Natural Park, whether San Miguel at Cabo de Gata, the beaches of San José, of Las Negras or Carboneras.
The main attraction of Níjar, founded by the Muslims in the 13th Century, is its Old Quarter consisting of the houses around the watchtower at the top of the village and the Market Square, as well the Barrio de las Eras (Quarter of the threshing-floors) which is the area where the traditional ceramic workshops are all situated. The centre of the Old Quarter is the Plaza de la Glorieta (main square), formed by the Town Hall on one side and the Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation on the other. You can buy the traditional rag-rugs, or pottery typical of the region in one of the many craft shops distributed throughout the town.
The climate of Níjar is classed as Mediterraean semi-arid, with a mean annual temperature of 19.5 Celsius (67.1Fahrenheit), 3000 hours of sun per year, and 30 days of rain irregularly distributed through the year.
Living in Níjar allows us to enjoy an Andalusian village which has preserved its traditional character while having all the conveniences of modern life, such as the modern "High-Resolution" Hospital of El Toyo (15 mins drive from the village) and Almería's international airport 20 kms away.
